VM Motori
In January 1995, Detroit Diesel acquired VM Motori S.p.A. (VM), a major independent supplier of state-of-the-art automotive turbo diesel engines. Headquartered in Cento, Italy, VM has long been respected throughout Europe for its high technology diesel engines for automotive applications including minivans, sport utility vehicles and passenger cars. About 20% of VM's engine production is destined for industrial markets, including European marine customers.
In the United States, VM represents an opportunity for long-range growth. To support the increased engineering activities for VM, Detroit Diesel established a VM pilot center in the Fall of 1995 as an integral part of our vastly expanded engineering pilot center at our Redford, Michigan complex. This facility was initially designed to support engineering activities for heavy-duty trucks, buses, construction and industrial vehicles. The VM pilot center's work is focused on vehicle repowers with VM products; design, development and test support for VM engines; and services to auto manufacturers in the United States.
