Series 40 Engine
The "New" Detroit Diesel Series 40 engine is the latest generation in a family of diesel engines with over 100 years of experience. The Series 40 is an entirely new design, engineered and manufactured using the most advanced technology available today. The result is a lightweight, 4-cycle, inline, six cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine spanning a horsepower range of 160 to 330 horsepower.
Comprised of 7.6 and 8.7 liter displacements, the Series 40 engine family is available in turbocharged and turbocharged air-to-air charge cooled models. The 4 models in the Series 40 family provide the engine with versatility in the automotive, construction, industrial, and generator set markets.
|
The two displacements of the Series 40 allow this engine series to provide a wide range of horsepower offerings in all market sectors. This enables the Series 40 to offer power that is needed under any condition while maintaining the high standards of performance the engine achieves.
The reliability and durability of the Series 40 engine have been assured by a host of premium features. These include a high strength alloy cast iron deep skirt cylinder block with wet-type replaceable liners, induction hardened crankshaft, premium design cylinder head with replaceable valve guides and valve seat inserts, and large crankshaft and connecting rod bearings - all designed to provide maximum life.

Features and Benefits
The Series 40 has been designed in 2 displacements, while maintaining a high degree of component commonality. Components that are shared among the two displacements include: cylinder block, cylinder head, front cover and gear train, flywheel housing, and intake and exhaust manifolds.
|
The premium design features that this family of engines shares allow Series 40 engines to provide:
- Reliability
- Durability
- Low Emissions
- High Performance
- Low Maintenance Cost
- Optimum Fuel Economy
- Gear Driven Accessories
- Light Weight
|
Cylinder Head The one piece cylinder head incorporates helical inlet ports designed to provide enhanced swirl for efficient combustion. Optimum cylinder head to block clamp load and maximum gasket sealing are ensured by 26 equally spaced bolts.
Combustion System The Series 40 engine design incorporates the latest technology in direct fuel injection, turbocharging as well as air-to-air charge cooling. This technology enables the Series 40 to continue to meet increasing on- and off-highway emission standards. Current automotive Series 40 engine models are certified to meet EPA and CARB emission standards without the use of exhaust aftertreatment including a catalytic convertor.
Lube Oil System An engine mounted oil cooler maintains oil temperature within the optimum range, while two oil jets per cylinder cool and lubricate the piston to prolong engine life. The oil system includes a thermostatically controlled temperature valve for fast warm up. The high pressure relief valve provides cold start engine protection. The new Series 40 has lengthened oil and oil filter change intervals to 12,000 miles (450 hours).
Fuel Injection System Bosch in-line injection pumps are standard equipment on the Series 40. Gear driven, the system provides high-pressure delivery up to 17,000 P.S.I., enabling the Series 40 engine to meet emission standards without sacrificing performance or economy. Series 40 engines have a lengthened fuel filter interval to 24,000 miles (900 hours).
Serpentine Belt Drive The serpentine belt is the main drive for the alternator, water pump, and cooling fan. The single, 8 groove, poly-vee design with automatic tensioning results in a virtually maintenance free belt drive.
Piston Design The newly designed pistons include a high technology 3-ring pack. The top fire ring is a keystone design, and is faced with a plasma spray-coating of molybdenum, nickel, and chromium. This new design provides exceptional oil control and maximizes piston life.
Wet Cylinder Liners The Series 40 wet-type replaceable liners are spin-cast, induction hardened, and plateau honed. This wet liner design provides maximum heat transfer, extended piston and ring life, and facilitates rebuild to original factory specifications.
Gear Train Series 40 engines provide the ability to gear drive an engine air compressor and power steering pump from a single location. This location may alternately be used for other accessories to 55 horsepower.
Crankshaft The Series 40 crankshaft is made of micro alloy forged steel which is body hardened. Journals are induction hardened for maximum strength. This design also allows for multiple regrindings which reduces rebuild costs.
Cylinder Block The new cylinder block consists of high strength alloy cast iron with an integral deep skirt design for maximum strength and lower noise levels. This same block is used in both Series 40 displacements?7.6L and 8.7L?providing common installation requirements over a wide horsepower range.
